Competing as a double threats is a great opportunity to diversify and build your skillset whether you’re a new or returning mocker.
What exactly is a double threat?
A double threat is a competitor who performs as both a witness and an attorney.
As a fall double threat, you will get the chance to compete on both sides of the case (prosecution and defense) in both roles (witness and attorney). While exciting, performing as a double threat is a big responsibility as you’re learning the facts of the case from two perspectives and functioning in multiple different roles. The learning curve is high, but so is the reward.
How do you try out as a double threat?
To try out as a fall double threat, simply sign up for both a witness and attorney tryout slot. When you fill out your tryout form, signify that you would like to be considered for a fall double threat role. You will also be able to designate your second and third role preferences (ex. I would like to be considered for a fall double threat role; if I am not selected to be a fall double threat, I would like to be a witness; if I am not selected for either of those, I would like to be an attorney).
In order to make the team as a fall double threat, you will need to meet a higher point threshold in both your attorney and witness tryout. This means that your attorney tryout may not be strong enough for you to be selected as a fall double threat, but could still be strong enough for you to make the team as just an attorney. Moral of the story: it is important to have strong performances in both of your tryouts and to put a lot of thought into your tryout preference form in the case that you are not selected as a fall double threat.
What happens if I meet the cutoff?
Because our tryout process is structured in two rounds, meeting the cutoff for both the witness and attorney thresholds in the first round doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be drafted as a double threat in the second round. If trying out as a double threat is something that interests you, make that clear on your callback preference form and it will be considered during the drafting process.
